Elsevier Needs Assessment Survey: Oncology Care Model

Under the bipartisan Medicare and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMS Innovation Center) has developed Alternative Payment Models (APMs) designed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of specialty care. Among those specialty models is the Oncology Care Model (OCM), which aims to provide higher quality, better coordinated oncology care at the same or lower cost to Medicare.

On July 1 of 2016, the OCM was rolled out to 195 oncology clinics across the US, entering these oncology practices into payment models that include financial and performance accountability for episodes of care surrounding chemotherapy administration to cancer patients. The practices participating in OCM have committed to providing enhanced services to Medicare beneficiaries such as improved care coordination, navigation, and national treatment guidelines for care.
